Lego Dimensions has been announced as the first in the franchise to introduce a toy to life element.
The latest entry in the Lego videogame franchise is called Lego Dimensions and combines physical Lego brick building with an interactive console game experience.
Available from September 29 2015 on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3 and Wii U, it’s the first ever Lego toys-to-life experience.
“When kids play with Lego bricks, they build beyond the singular brands, intermixing all of the their favourite characters and universes, and we have come up with a way for players to experience that in games”, said Jon Burton, Founder and Creative Director at developer TT Games.
Lego Dimensions will fuse many of the Lego universes together, including DC Comics, Lord of the Rings, The Lego Movie, Back to the Future and Lego Ninjago.

Entertainment. “LEGO Dimensions will bring fans innovative and joyful gameplay with an amazing mash-up of huge brands in both the physical and digital worlds.”

The Lego Dimensions Starter Pack will include the Lego Toy Pad, which similar to the functionality of Skylanders Trap Team – currently the leading franchises in the toys-to-life genre – allows special Lego minifigures and objects into the game.
You also get bricks to build the Lego Gateway, three Lego minifigures (Lego Batman, Lego Gandalf and Wyldstyle from the Lego Movie) and the amazing Lego Batmobile.
You’ll also be able to expand Lego Dimensions using expansion packs – Level Packs, Team Packs and Fun Packs for new buildable characters, vehicles, tools, gadgets and more.
The first packs coming in 2015 will include a Back to the Future Level Pack with a Lego Marty McFly minifigure, a Lego Ninjago Team Pack, two DC Comics Fun Packs, three Lord of the Rings Fun Pack and four The Lego Movie Fun Packs.
What’s great is that the Lego Dimensions Starter Pack Toy Pad, Gateway and videogame will be used to support all future expansion packs – no upgrades required.
What makes us a little sad is the pricing. The Lego Dimensions Starter Pack will set you back £99.99 on Xbox One and PS4, while the Wii U, Xbox 360 and PS3 versions are slightly cheaper at £89.99.
As for expansion packs, you’re looking at £14.99 each for the Fun Packs and £29.99 each for the Level Packs.
