Another pat on the back for producing more than a mere megapixel jump.
Just over a year again I waxed lyrical about the Casio Exilim Card EX-S500 as it had the body of a malnourished Nicole Richie and the brains of Stephen Hawking. Technology marches on though and while the Exilim Card EX-S770 still has the frame of Lionel’s vapid daughter, it makes the one time golden child appear to have the intellectual capacity of Paris Hilton.
Let’s begin with the obvious: megapixels are up. Five is clearly so last year and a strapping new 7.2MP sensor has been inserted along with a smoother revised exterior. Dimensions are virtually identical at 94.5 x 60.4 x 17.3mm (13.7mm at its thinnest point) though it does weigh eight more grams at 127g.
I’m sure you’ll forgive the S770 this terrible slip however when you learn that the 2.2in LCD has been replaced by a proportionately humongous 2.8incher with a widescreen aspect, 230k pixels and knock out brightness of 1,100cd/m2 (enough to see shots outdoors on a sunny day, Casio boasts). Naturally enough movies can now be made in a choice of VGA or 16:9 at a 704 x 384 making them compatible with widescreen TVs. All video is stored in the space saving Mpeg4 format.
Anti-shake technology makes it inside – as it seems to on most digicams these days – a best shot mode lets users select from any one of 35 consecutive snaps and SDHC support is go. Furthermore a swish new bundled app called ‘Data Transport Software’ enables computer data including business documents, email and web pages to be automatically converted to Jpegs and uploaded to the camera. This should be particularly handy for tourist maps, To Do Lists and unread messages.
Start up time is just one second and there’s a 3x optical zoom, though the maximum ISO of 400 is a little limited and I’ve seen greater stamina than 200 shot battery life offered here.
The S770 is available in silver this month with red and blue following in September. Pricing has yet to be divulged but it looks a dead cert to be in the £250-299 bracket and also money well spent.
