Kickstarter’s most epic failure asks backers for more money

Coolest Cooler

The makers of the Kickstarter-funded Coolest Cooler continue to kick sand in the faces of indignant backers, who’ve yet to receive their product.

After blowing $13 million in funding without fulfilling its obligations to more than 36,000 of its backers, founder Ryan Grepper has told supporters they can finally have their cooler, as long as they fork out even more cash.

Now, for a cool $97, those still waiting for their admittedly pretty sweet cooler – complete with a bottle opener, Bluetooth speaker, USB charger and margarita mixer – will actually receive it.

However, this $97 is on top of the $165-$225 backers already paid back in summer 2014 – and all this while the product remains available for anyone to buy on Amazon for $399.

Grepper says this extra money is needed to fund production and those who hand over the cash will get receive their cooler before 4 July.

Grepper says the original pledge levels were too low, and not enough to fund production.

"Unfortunately, we didn’t set the pledge levels high enough to cover the final quality of the Coolest Cooler,” Grepper wrote in an update sent to backers (via Motherboard).

“The Coolest Cooler ultimately cost more than we expected to develop and manufacture.

“We would allow backers to pay for the remaining cost of their Coolest to get it faster, with a guaranteed delivery date before July 4,” Grepper added. “We are open to this option and exploring it here because you have asked us to do so.”

Grepper claims that he will fulfil the orders of every backer “as long as there is breath in [his] body", while assuring that the company won’t be entering bankruptcy, à la Zano.

@Ryan Grepper (or any of his staff),

This is 100% unacceptable! You have had our money for over 2 years for a product you seem incapable of making....Yes I make that statement as originally the cooler was due 2 years ago, then 1 year ago, and now you are trying to extort MORE money from me to "get it sooner"

Honestly, you can shove that "Get it sooner $97" right back where the sun don't shine, and instead REFUND MY MONEY (Yes that is $285 US dollars backer number 52754) NOW! Not 2 weeks before your imaginary shipping date, that is NOW!

It is MY money, not yours to hold onto for as long as you want.

This is by far the biggest disappointment of my Kickstarter contributions, and for one so large, it is so sad to see you fall this hard.

In case you are missing out on the theme of this email.....I WANT MY MONEY REFUNDED NOW, AND I AM NOT GOING AWAY UNTIL YOU MAKE IT HAPPEN.

This is not an attack on your staff, as no doubt they are only following your orders Ryan, but it is unacceptable, disgraceful, and I want it rectified NOW!

$285 USD refunded before the week is out!

One very pissed off supporter of the biggest kickstarter failure EVER!

Wow I didn't know about the extra $97. That almost seems like extortion. This is why from a backers perspective I am starting to really prefer crowdspeaking over crowdfunding. This was the biggest Kickstarter success ever and its having major issues. I have had a few experiences like this will smaller projects however pulling this with 13 million dollars is a bit unacceptable.

The extra $97 is pretty messed up.

How is this not in breach of Kickstarter's Ts&Cs? And even if not it must surely count as bait and switch, which is illegl.

I understand being upset about it, but I don't think posting your request or details here is the appropriate place. Perhaps get in touch with them directly rather than hoping they stumble across your Disqus comment on a lowly tech website.
