Just Cause 3 has one of the biggest maps of all time

The island of Medici in Just Cause 3 will be one of the biggest maps in gaming history.

Just Cause 3 will take place on the fictional island of Medici, and it’s going to be absolutely massive.

The island of Medici is located in the Mediterranean Sea, and sits at over 400 square miles, according to developer Avalanche Studios.

“I think we still have one of the biggest maps ever,” said game director Roland Lesterlin.

Medici will be comprised of 3 major regions that can be explored as you progress through the game.

The first region is being described as a “medley of wealthy and poor towns” with a variety of agricultural areas.

Region 2 will be full of dangerous military bases and “very poor fishing towns,” providing plenty of opportunity for surfing (hopefully) and explosions.

The third region is a large mountainous region, perhaps with some wildlife. “It’s sort of like our Game of Thrones” art director Zach Schlappi said.

Just Cause 3’s open world was designed on the basis of two factors, and grew exponentially from that.

We started off thinking about what the gameplay was, who Rico was,” Lesterlin said.

This resulted in a “very vertical environment” to fully take advantage of Rico’s grappling abilities that allow him to climb and fly into the air.

As part of the marketing campaign for Just Cause 3, Square Enix is giving away an entire island to one lucky player.

Just Cause 3 will launch for PS4, Xbox One and PC on December 1
