Jony Ive talks Apple Watch design and stolen ideas

With the Apple Watch confirmed to be heading for an early 2015 release, Apple’s design guru Jony Ive has spoken out on the thoughts behind the company’s first wearable.

While the likes of Samsung and Motorola have adopted a single design approach to their respective wearable efforts – the Samsung Gear S and the Moto 360 – Ive has explained how he designed the Apple Watch to suit consumers’ varying tastes and demands.

“One of the biggest challenges that we found was that we wouldn’t all be sitting here wearing the same thing,” the iPod, iPhone and iPad design mastermind said speaking with the London Design Museum recently.

He added: “I don’t think we want to wear the same thing which is why we developed this system, not a single product.

The Apple Watch will be available in a variety of guises – including traditional, sport and luxe models – as well as a number of colour schemes and with a mass of interchangeable watch straps.

Although the Cupertino-based company is a latecomer to the wearable’s party, it is expected its one-size-doesn’t-fit-all approach will soon be ‘adopted’ (read copied) by others.

This where Apple leads, others follow premise is nothing new to Ive who has seen many of his greatest design works used to ‘inspire’ rival devices. Speaking out on what some might consider to be flattery of his work, Ive has stated rivals are stealing, not being inspired by, his designs.

“If you look at the work of the studio, and you think 80 per cent of this isn’t going to work, one of the sad things is – and this is why perhaps we may seem a little testy when things we have been working on for eight years are copied in six months – but it wasn’t inevitable that it was going to work.”

He added: “Its not copying, its theft. They stole our time, time we could have had with our families.

“I actually feel quite strongly about it. It’s funny – I was talking to somebody and they said do you think when somebody copies what you do it’s flattering? No.”

Although the Apple Watch was officially announced earlier this year, there is currently no word on a precise release date or pricing details for the LG G Watch R challenger.
