Weird Motomods aside, Motorola’s recent Moto Z announcement had everyone asking one question: Is the Moto X dead?
Well Motorola has finally spoken out and revealed that the Moto X has not, in fact, been killed off. According to the Lenovo-owned phone maker, both the Moto X and Moto Z are separate ranges, and the latter isn’t replacing the former.
“Moto X is alive and well. In fact, Moto X Force recently launched in multiple new markets around the world,” explained Motorola, in a statement provided to Android Police.

The statement continued:
“Moto X and Moto Z do share some great qualities, but they ultimately provide different experiences and make our portfolio more robust for consumers looking for the perfect smartphone to fit their needs. Tech-hungry consumers who are looking to get a brand new set of experiences from their smartphone will turn to Moto Z and Moto Mods.”
That said, it’s hard to see how the Moto X and Moto Z won’t conflict. The Moto Z features a Snapdragon 820 chip and a 5.5-inch QHD display, which marks it out as a high-end device. Last year’s Motorola flagship – the Moto X Style – fell under the Moto X brand, so we’re a little confused.

There are two likely scenarios here. The first is that the Moto X remains the core series, and the Moto Z acts as an experimental spin-off, like the LG Flex or Galaxy Edge devices. The second is that the Moto X moves to the mid-range, as seen with last year’s Moto X Play, leaving the top-end to the Moto Z line.
Or maybe, just maybe, Lenovo has lost the plot.
