Is the Galaxy Note 7 as rugged as you think?

Note 7 test

The Galaxy Note 7 is one of the best Android handsets available, perhaps even outdoing the spectacular Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge.

The refined design, stellar display, and the best smartphone camera on the maket are all features that can be found on the other Galaxy models, but, it's the new Gorilla Glass 5 coating that gives the Note something extra in the way of durability.

At least, that's how it seems on paper. Now, YouTuber JerryRigEverything has put the phone through its paces to see just how durable that new glass is – and the results are surprising to say the least.

Testing out the scratch resistance of the glass, Jerry – no stranger to durability tests of this sort – found the Note 7 to be less scratch resistant than its predecessor, the Galaxy Note 5.

It's also less scratch resistant than the iPhone 6S and the Galaxy S7, with Jerry commenting: "While this Gorilla Glass 5 might be more shatter resistant than the Gorilla Glass 4, it is only one step above plastic on the hardness scale".

The seasoned tester recommends buying a screen protector if you've invested in a Note 7, as the phone will start showing scratches very quickly otherwise.

What's more, the fingerprint scanner, located below the phablet's home button, stopped working as soon as the button was scratched – something which didn't happen with other phones that have a similar setup, such as the Moto Z and LG G5.

When it came to the flame test, the Note 7 lasted only eight seconds before the pixels started to turn white, again a relatively poor result in comparison with other high-end handsets.

The much more affordable OnePlus 3, for instance, managed to last 14 seconds in the same flame test.

While the Note 7 certainly looks the part then, and actually manages to hold up very well in the bend test, it seems you'll want to be very careful with your shiny new device.
