You may well have seen LG's rollable TV screen, which was shown off during this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

But now, according to a report from Korea's ETNews, the firm is working on bringing a foldable phone to market.

The concept isn't exactly a new one. A Samsung patent spotted earlier this year detailed the technology, prompting many to speculate that we could see a foldable phone from the company very soon.

Based on the new report however, it seems LG is close to producing a similar product, which would be capable of folding open to create a tablet-style display.

No other specifics about the technology are known at this point.

In the article, the firm is said to have moved the bendable screen concept from research into development, hinting at a possible consumer product which could be hitting the shelves sooner than we might have thought.

Until now, LG hadn't revealed anything about its foldable phone ambitions. But the company is known for using OLED technology in its TVs, and last month was confirmed as doubling production of its OLED displays.

OLED was used in the rollable screen LG showed off at this year's CES show, and if LG is planning a foldable phone, the display tech will undoubtedly form a big part of the design.

Although the company's flagship smartphone, the LG G5 has an LCD screen then, the increased OLED production could mean that future phones will indeed include OLED.

There's been no word from the company on this latest report, but we expect to hear more this year. Whether LG will beat Samsung to the punch remains to be seen, but we're excited to see what happens.
