Is Amazon planning to beat Apple to a live TV streaming service?

Amazon is the latest tech giant to consider building a live TV streaming service, according to a report on Wednesday.

The internet behemoth has approached major US content providers CBS and NBCUniversal regarding the possibility of accessing their channels, Bloomberg Business sources say.

Those people "familiar with the matter" say talks are in the early stages, but if Amazon did decide to go ahead with the service, it has the perfect vessel in the new 4K-ready Amazon Fire TV.

The company already has its Prime video on-demand service, but the live TV streaming market is beginning to explode.

The PlayStation Vue and Sling TV services are disrupting the market, while it's thought that Apple is planning its own platform for early 2016.

Cupertino has reportedly been working with content providers to put together a new streaming service for its Apple TV platform, with tailored content from local affiliates. That would mean local news, local programming and local sports just like a traditional TV service.

Negotiations have been prolonged, by all accounts, which suggests an Amazon service might be some time away.
