iPhone 7 Plus trademark leak hints at mysterious new features

Hours before the iPhone 7 launch, newly uncovered trademark filings offer an insight into Apple’s latest mobile tech.

A MacRumors reader has revealed two Apple trademark applications that were filed in Brunei. The applications covered the terms ‘A10 Fusion’ and ‘iSight Duo’, which gives us significant clues about what we can expect from tonight’s iPhone 7 launch.

For a start, iSight Duo is almost certainly the branding for the long-rumoured dual-lens camera that’s expected to feature on the iPhone 7 Plus. The feature has been heavily tipped in recent weeks, and it’s said that the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 will miss out on the technology.

Unfortunately, we’re not so savvy about what A10 Fusion could mean. The ‘A10’ part refers to the new system-on-a-chip that’s going to debut in the iPhone 7. Unfortunately, it’s not clear how ‘Fusion’ relates to this. For the unaware, a system-on-a-chip, or ‘SoC’, is the main computing component of an iPhone. It’s a chip that combines several components; for instance, the iPhone 6S’s A9 chip featured a processor, a GPU, RAM, a new image processor, and an M9 motion coprocessor.

The news comes just one day after renowned trademark lawyer Brian Conroy revealed a veritable horde of never-before-seen Apple trademark filings, as follows:

  • Tap to replace
  • Raise to wake
  • Apple digital touch
  • The future of TV is apps
  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • Iris engine
  • Iris image engine
  • Aired case
  • Home hub
  • Planet of the apps

Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 7 at tonight’s launch event. The keynote is set to kick off at 18:00 UK time, and could also host the reveal of the long-awaited Apple Watch 2.
