iPhone 7 Plus really will have a dual lens camera, apparently

Apple’s iPhone 7 looks unlikely to be a major revamp, but the rumoured dual-lens camera has us interested. Will it really happen?

A new case for the upcoming iPhone 7 Plus features an elongated camera cut-out designed to house two lenses. It’s further evidence that Apple could be considering including a dual-lens module on at least one of its new smartphones due for launch this September.

The case is currently retailing on China’s Oppomart under the name ‘Sunnyc Full Protective Silicon Case for iPhone 7 Plus’. It’s only available for pre-order right now, and costs $9.99 (USD). Oppomart says the cases will start shipping at the end of June.

Is this really proof of a dual-lens iPhone? Not quite. Oppomart may just be basing its cases on the plethora of early leaks and dodgy renders that have been posted online in recent weeks. As such, there’s every chance that Oppomart’s case is based on an entirely spurious design. After all, there’s no saying for sure that Apple will even release an iPhone 7 Plus.

Nevertheless, we’re now just three months out from a prospective iPhone launch, so it’s highly likely that Apple’s iPhone 7 design has been finalised. If that’s true, there’s no reason why Apple wouldn’t have supplied certain trusted case makers with schematics for the handset to ensure that there are plenty of cases available when the phone launches.

However, we can’t verify the designs that Oppomart is basing its cases on, so we’d advise caution when buying cases before a phone has actually launched.

But why would Apple want to include a dual-lens camera anyway? Well having two lenses can improve a number of things, include a camera’s ability to zoom, to focus, and to manage light. It’s a technology that’s rumoured to feature on Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 6, and has already been debuted on the new Huawei P9.
