iPhone 6S Plus sells out, might not ship until mid-October

Well that didn’t take long. Apple only opened pre-orders on its iPhone 6S and 6S Plus on Saturday, and already the latter – and some of the former – have sold out.

On the UK Apple site (via The Telegraph), all four colours of iPhone 6S Plus are listed as being dispatched in three to four weeks. The handset is supposed to go on sale on September 25 (a week on Friday), so that’s a delay of one to two weeks.

The iPhone 6S is still listed as shipping on September 25 “in most areas” except for the Rose Gold model, which is listed as being dispatched in two to three weeks.

The Rose Gold is a new colour for Apple. It’s thought to be its attempt to appeal to the Chinese market, which it only entered in October last year.

Last year, the iPhone 6 Plus also sold out during the pre-order weekend. And in 2013, the then-new gold iPhone 5S sold out first, with buyers having to wait weeks.

Apple unveiled the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus last week, alongside the iPad Pro and new Apple TV.

Both handsets feature an always-on Siri, and a new 3D Touch interface. This works similarly to Force Touch on the Apple Watch and MacBook, but can differentiate between three levels of pressure (instead of two): normal press, peek and pop. Peek involves gently holding your finger on the screen to preview an email, say. Want to go into the email itself? Just press a little harder to pop into it.
