iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus may be waterproof

The new iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus may be more resistant to a dip in water than Apple has let on.

Apple made no mention of its new phone’s resistance to water at its early September launch event. You won’t find any boasts to that effect in their marketing material either.

Yet one YouTube user has discovered that the new phones are actually quite water tight.

In a recent video, Zach Straley (via 9to5mac) submerges a switched-on iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus in separate bowls of water for an hour. He pulls them out at various intervals to check on how they’re doing.

After the full 60 minute spell has elapsed, both the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6S Plus are found to be operating perfectly. Straley confirms that the phones’ cameras, 3D touch screens, power buttons, and speakers are operating normally.

He also later confirmed that their exposed headphone and Lightning ports are working properly too.

Similar tests on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were conducted last year. The tests found these two phones to be resistant to the effects of water, if not entirely immune. It seems the iPhone 6S may have been improved on this front.

Teardowns of both last year’s models and the current iPhone 6S range have shown that Apple has added internal rubber gaskets around the power and volume keys. While it won’t be recommending you take your phone into the pool (even Sony has backtracked on that one), Apple appears to have worked to enable its latest phones to survive a drop in the sink or toilet.
