The iPhone 6 might be the first Apple smartphone to feature NFC connectivity, according to some leaked components.
Rumours of iPhone models packing the NFC technology found in the majority of Android smartphones have been going around for a number of years.
So far, no iPhone models including the most recent iPhone 5S flagship have featured the technology, but it seems the iPhone 6 may be about to break the cycle.
A new set of photographs from French technology website Nowhereelse.fr sources show hardware that claims to prove the iPhone 6 will offer NFC compatibility alongside faster 802.11ac Wi-Fi connectivity.
The images show the difference in circuitry between the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6, but doesn’t concretely confirm that the differences are down to NFC and faster Wi-Fi.
Although the purported iPhone 6 logic board does bare similarities to the iPhone 5S version, the new iPhone model has a long piece that extends across the top of the phone. It’s not clear what this piece will do, but the site claims it will be where the NFC will sit.
Of course, as the iPhone 6 is going to be bigger than the current models, the internal hardware is bound to be rejigged a bit to accommodate a larger 4.7-inch screen and bigger battery for example.
We wouldn’t be surprised if Apple decided to kit out the iPhone 6 with NFC this year, as the technology is becoming much more useful and consumer friendly than ever before.
For example, the Transport for London has now confirmed that the London Underground will start accepting contactless payments on your smartphone from September 16.
Although this is only for EE customers with compatible NFC equipped smartphones, commuters can take advantage of the EE Cash on Tap app to pay for their travel and it will cost them no more than it would with an Oyster Card.
The iPhone 6 is supposed to launch in September, but whether it will have NFC we’ll just have to wait and see.
