iPhone 6 sapphire display reportedly limited to 5.5-inch model

The iPhone 6 sapphire display could be limited to just the 5.5-inch model, if a new report is correct.

Despite videos of the sapphire crystal display panels emerging online earlier this month, with a 4.7-inch size nonetheless, a fresh report states that Apple may only use the technology for its high-end iPhone 6 models.

According to JPMorgan Securities analysts, Apple will only manufacture 10 million sapphire crystal displays for the iPhone 6 in total.

A previous report stated that only around 10 million 5.5-inch iPhone models will be produced too, reigniting rumours that the sapphire crystal display technology will be exclusive to the larger iPhone model.

However, JPMorgan states that the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 could still get some of the sapphire crystal action, but it could be limited to the 128GB version, which is pretty much off limits to anyone without a serious amount of spare cash.

As sapphire crystal displays cost around £17 – £20 more to manufacture than Gorilla Glass displays so the price of the iPhone 6 family could be pushed up a bit more than the current iPhone 5S flagship.

Perhaps then, Apple could be testing out sapphire panels and the consumer appetite for them ahead of introducing the panels to all models in 2015.

We are sceptical as to whether Apple would limit such an important new feature of the iPhone 6 to a few select models, rather than offering it to its loyal iPhone fanbase.

We’re especially a little unconvinced by this rumour because of the leaked iPhone 6 crystal sapphire panels, which come from the notoriously reliable Sonny Dickson.

The iPhone 6 release date is expected to fall somewhere in September and come with the new Apple A8 processor, a new 13-megapixel Sony-made rear camera and a revamped, rounded edge design.
