Apple has officially announced the iPhone 6 Plus with a 5.5-inch display, marking the largest ever iPhone launch.
The iPhone 6 Plus has a 5-inch display with a 1920 x 1080p full HD resolution and is just 7.1mm thick, down from the 7.6mm iPhone 5S.
In fact, it has 158 per cent more pixels than the 5S and is protected by ion-strengthed glass — not sapphire.
Like a miniature version of the iPad mini 2, the iPhone 6 Plus has a special one-handed mode that the company calls “reachability”.
This lets you access apps on the larger screen a lot more easily thanks to the broader range of view. If you double tap the home button to slide the apps down the page, letting you access reach the higher up buttons.
Turn the phone horizontal and you get a two pane display. The keyboard is expanded too, offering a copy and paste button among other shortcuts either side of the QWERTY keyboard.
With both iPhone 6 models, the power button has been relocated to the side of the device.
It runs on the new Apple A8 chip that comes with the M8 co-processor for fitness tracking. That processor features 20 billion transistors on a 20nm process, making it 13 per cent smaller than the iPhone 5S’ Apple A7 processor, helping to slim down the iPhone 6 models.
This processor is 20 per cent faster than its predecessor and has 50 per cent faster graphics too.
As for battery life you should get 16 days on standby from the iPhone 6 Plus, or 24 hours 3G talk time, 12 hours of 3G browsing, 4G browsing or 14 hours of video playback.
One of its cool new features includes Wi-Fi calling, which will be supported by EE in the UK.
As for the camera, the iPhone 6 Plus has an 8-megapixel iSight camera with dual LED TruTone flash, 1.5 ultra pixels and an f/2.2 aperture. That is backed by an all new sensor with something called “focus pixels”. This lets the iPhone 6 Plus offer auto focus that is twice as fast as the iPhone 5S thanks to phase detection auto focus.
Phase Detection add advanced noise reduction and next-gen local tone mapping.
Panoramas can be up to 43-megapixels, which should make for some pretty impressive landscape photography.
One of the main differentiators between the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is that the latter has optical image stabilisation compared to the former’s digital image stabilisation.
Both iPhone 6 models can record 1080p HD video at 30 or 60fps, but can also record slo-mo video footage at 240fps – much to the delight of the crowd.
In the front there’s an all-new FaceTime HD camera that lets in 81 per cent more light with a larger f/2.2 aperture. You can even take burst selfies, as well as single shot HDR photos.
iPhone 6 Plus is available to pre-order from September 12 and will go on sale from September 19.
