The larger screens on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets may be encouraging iPad owners to leave their tablets on the coffee table.
According to the makers of Pocket app, which allows users to collate web articles and read them at their convenience, folks who own both an iPad and an iPhone are now relying more upon their smartphones if they’ve upgraded to one of the larger screen models.
Analysing data from users rocking both the phone and tablet, the company found the proportion of usage has changed dramatically since the introduction of the latest Apple handsets.
iPhone 5S users accessed Pocket 55 per cent of the time on their 4-inch phone and 45 per cent on their iPad.
However, for owners of the 4.7-inch iPhone 6, that ratio rises to 72 per cent on the phone and 28 per cent on the tablet.
It’s even higher with the larger with the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus, with 80 per cent of Pocket use coming on the smartphone.
The moral of the story appears to be: The bigger the smartphone screen, the more comfortable users are consuming web content through apps like Pocket and the less inclined they are to wait until they can access their tablet.
Pocket said on its official blog: “Users with an iPhone 6 now read on their tablets 19% less during the week and 27% less over the weekend. Those with a 6 Plus are on their tablets 31% less during the week and 36% less over the weekend.”
Pocket also found those users on an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus consumed more content in general.
“We saw that users with both an iPhone and an iPad consumed significantly more content as soon as they upgraded to an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus.
“Those with the 6 now open 33% more articles and videos inside Pocket than they did with a 5/5S, and those with the 6 Plus open 65% more items than they did with a smaller phone.”
So are Apple’s larger smartphones threatening to cannibalise the iPad line? Well not officially. Pocket says the iPad still reigns supreme at night time.
“There remains one place where tablets still hold reign: your nightstand. Regardless of which iPhone they have, users still reach for their iPads around 9pm for some late-night, bedtime reading.”
