iPhone 6 5.5-inch WQHD display shown off by manufacturer?

The larger rumoured iPhone 6 5.5-inch display may have just been shown off by manufacturer Japan Display Inc. (JDI).

JDI has announced a brand new 5.5-inch WQHD display with a 1,440 x 2,560p resolution, which it states will be used in “leading-edge smartphones”.

The company is already a major Apple iPhone display supplier and the company revealed the new display will start shipping in April.

Last week, Japanese publication Nikkei revealed that there would be two iPhone 6 display sizes – 4.7- and 5.5-inches – with Apple choosing to use JDI as one of the major suppliers.

Nikkei also suggested that the resolution Apple would use for the iPhone 6 would be “significantly” higher than that of the iPhone 5S.

JDI’s 5.5-inch display has a resolution of 1,440 x 2560p WQHD, which equates to an impressive 538ppi image density.

Currently, the iPhone 5S has a 4-inch 1,136 x 640p resolution display, with an image density of 326ppi.

Several industry insiders have already tipped the new JDI display for the iPhone 6, but believe it rather bizarre that JPI has announced it so publicly if Apple has already put its name forward for the panel.

“Typically apple wants ‘first dibs’ on the new part, so it’s a little surprising that JDI is announcing this now… We don’t expect to see the iPhone 6 until second half 2014,” said Paul Semenza, a senior VP at NPD DisplaySearch in response to the display announcement.

Semenza also spoke of the second 4.7-inch iPhone 6 model, which has been rumoured several times over.

“There is also a possibility of another spec – a 4.7-inch 1,600 x 900 [display]. As always, Apple runs parallel development programs, to test out which is the best approach or just to try to confuse the rest of the world.”

Even a 4.7-inch display with a resolution of 1,600 x 900p would equate to a 390ppi image density, which is still much better than that offered by the current iPhone models.

It may well be that the UK market only gets its hands on the 4.7-inch model, as the larger 5.5-inch version is suggested to be a Chinese market exclusive.
