A new report from Japan claims that the next iPhone, which is being dubbed the iPhone 5S, will be released this August in a variety of colours.

Makotakara, which has a mixed record when it comes to predicting Apple's plans, has been told by its "informed sources" that Apple will announce the iPhone 5S in July and launch it in August.

In addition, the iPhone 5S will reportedly be available in more than just typical black and white options. Apple will follow the lead of its iPod touch range and add three bold new colours on top of the existing ones.

The source doesn't provide any specific details on the nature of these new colours, but it's worth bearing in mind that the current generation iPod touch comes in black, white, blue, yellow and pink.

Most are expecting the iPhone 5S to be a minor upgrade over the iPhone 5, as has been Apple's way with its iPhone models since the iPhone 3GS. As before, expect the outer appearance to be pretty much the same (barring those new colours, of course), with all the attention going on internal components.

It's expected that the iPhone 5S will receive a quicker processor and an improved camera module. Rumours of a fingerprint scanner have also been prevalent, although this would seem like quite a major element to implement into what will likely be a refinement rather than a radical design overhaul.

Still other sources are claiming that the iPhone 5S will come in two screen sizes, with a larger option to compete more directly against the likes of the 5-inch Samsung Galaxy S4.

Which of these features do you think we're likely to see, and which are necessary? Let us know in the comments section below.
