The iPhone 5C may not include certain software features when it launches, including Apple’s personal assistant Siri.
According to Piper Jaffray, an analyst for Gene Munster, Apple’s budget iPhone 5C will lack specific aspects of the iOS software with Siri reportedly not making the cut.
In order to make the iPhone 5C cheaper, the budget iPhone will not have Siri among other iOS 7 features to couple its plastic casing and reduced price tag.
“In terms of the phone itself, we expect the cheaper phone to have a plastic casing, 4-inch display, and lower end internal specs (processor, camera, memory, etc.) than the 5S/5 line up,” wrote Jaffray in a note to investors. “Additionally, we believe that Apple may exclude some software features, such as Siri, which we note was not an option on the iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 upon launch.”
In order for the iPhone 5C not to steal sales from the iPhone 5S, Apple may well chose to limit the software options on its budget smartphone.
However, it would be strange for Apple to remove Siri seeing as iOS 7 has an increased focus on its personal assistant and other voice functionality.
Jaffray also provided additional support to the iPhone 5S incorporating a fingerprint scanner, potentially in the form of a slightly convex home button made from Sapphire cystal.
He also indicated that this fingerprint scanner may well be used to make payment transactions in the future, perhaps in the next iOS instalment.
“We expect the iPhone 5S to include a fingerprint sensor with a basic unlocking feature, but do not believe the sensor will be built into iOS 7 enough to introduce a feature like secure payments as we believe that Authentec has only been a part of Apple for less than one year. We believe that payments could be a key feature of the next version of iOS in 2014.”
