Pictures of what claim to be production cases for Apple's upcoming iPad mini and iPhone 5 have been posted online. They show how the new devices compare to what you can currently get – the iPad and iPhone 4S.
These photos were leaked by Michael Rou on Flickr. His profile doesn't offer details on his background, but the linked Twitter profile describes him as a “Business School Talent”. In order to get his hands on these pictures of iPad mini and iPhone 5 cases, he'd have to have close links to the mobile accessories industry.
The cases show that the iPhone 5 is almost exactly as wide as the current iPhone 4S, but is significantly longer thanks to its larger 4in screen. The iPhone 4S has a 3:2 aspect display, but the iPhone 5 takes the series widescreen.
These pictures also show how the iPad mini will setup a halfway house in-between the iPhone and iPad. Its dimensions highlight that it's closer to the iPad in size – this is a tablet, not a phone or “phablet” - but it will be a good deal more portable than the 9.7in iPad. Most recent rumours agree that the iPad mini will feature a 7.85in screen. The iPad mini also features a headphone jack that sits up top – it's moving to the bottom in the iPhone 5, but not so for iPads it seems.
Why are accessories makes able to leak info about Apple products? They will often receive mock-up models of upcoming phones and tablets to help them produce accessories in time for launch. This is a particularly trying time for the accessories industry too, as Apple is about to introduce a new connector, the 9-pin jack socket. This is set to replace the 30-pin type that has been in use for a decade.
The iPhone 5 is set to launch tomorrow at 6PM GMT, however the jury's out as to whether the iPad mini will too be unveiled then, or later in the year. If you're interested in Apple's latest wares, drop back tomorrow for all the up-to-date info.
