UPDATE: The first wave of iPhone 5s is starting to sell out. Both the black 32GB and black 64GB editions are displaying as shipping in "2-3 weeks", rather than "2 weeks", as was previously shown.

The iPhone 5 pre-order has gone live in the UK. Head on over to the Apple Store online and you can earmark yourself one of Apple's new blowers, from £529 SIM-free.

This morning, the pre-order for the iPhone 5 went live in the UK. All three storage capacities of the iPhone are showing as dispatching in two weeks at the time of writing, suggesting that the very first batch of iPhone 5s may have already sold out - the phone is meant to be available in just one week, on 21 September.

The iPhone 5 is available in a whopping six different varieties. There are 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions of the white iPhone, and the same versions for the black version.

And the price? As ever, the new iPhone doesn't come cheap. You're looking at £529 for the 16GB versions, £599 for the 32GB and £699 for the top-dog 64GB model.

The iPhone 5 improves upon the iPhone 4S with a larger screen, a faster processor and re-designed camera setup. This is expected to be the most successful iPhone launch to date. The number to beat is four million sales in three days, achieved by the iPhone 4S, which was released in October 2011.

Apple's iPhone 5 also needs to beat the Samsung Galaxy S3. This, more than any other phone, is the iPhone 5's arch rival - and its biggest-name Android alternative. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has already sold 20 million units, and Samsung's JK Shin says the phone is expected to sell a further 10 million before the year is out.
