The Apple keynote at WWDC 2012 occurred last night in San Francisco. And apparently it gave away the identity of the iPhone 5 – due to launch later this year.

Eagle-eyed folks over at iDownloadBlog noticed that a widescreen iPhone was to be seen in an image that was part of Apple’s keynote presentation.  During an explanation of the GPS maps feature, you can quite clearly see that the iPhone in the pic is “more widescreen” than the current iPhone 4S. And according to the latest iPhone 5 leaks and rumours, this is exactly what the next iPhone will be like – squeezing a 4in screen into a frame not much wider than the current model.

Of course, there are a half-dozen explanations for this image, other than being a very roundabout way of unveiling the next iPhone three months early. It could be a photo editing blip, or simply a joke. Although not a company renowned for its pranks, there must be at least one person at Apple HQ with a sense of humour.

What do you think? A cunning tease or a slip of the mouse? The next iPhone is rumoured to launch this September.
