iPhone 5 remains UK’s most popular phone ahead of iPhone 5S release

Ahead of the upcoming iPhone 5S release date, Apple’s current flagship phone the iPhone 5 has once again been crowned the UK’s most popular smartphone.

Topping sales charts for a sixth consecutive month, the iPhone 5 has seen off continued competition from the Android powered likes of the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4.

Despite the rumoured introduction of the new flagship iPhone 5S in the coming weeks alongside the heavily rumoured new budget iPhone 5C, sales of Apple’s existing smartphones have been seemingly unaffected with the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S and aging iPhone 4 taking a clean sweep of the podium positions in the uSwitch Mobile Tracker chart for August.

The monthly chart, based on sales, pre-orders and live searches, has seen the Apple based dominance for the second consecutive month, with the iPhone range now covering off a selection of price points.

With few key smartphone releases in the past month, the chart’s top ten remains largely unchanged from July, with the Samsung Galaxy S4 and replaced Samsung Galaxy S3 holding firm in fourth and fifth spots respectively.

With the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini lining up in sixth and seventh places for the second month in a row, the Samsung Galaxy Ace has risen one place to eighth. Making way for the Ace, the flagship Sony Xperia Z has dropped to ninth.

While Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems dominate the chart, Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 platform has a single representative in the lead positions, with the Nokia Lumia 520 and new entry in tenth place.

“Things are likely to heat up from September, as the race to be Christmas number one kicks off,” Ernest Doku, a telecoms expert with uSwitch said on the static smartphone chart.

“Berlin’s IFA trade show will showcase this winter’s hottest new handsets from the major manufacturers, and the arrival of 4G to the UK from Vodafone and O2 has reinvigorated interest in the latest offerings.”

He added: “Naturally, rumours abound that Apple will compliment a premium device with a mid-range handset launch in September has sent the hype machine into overdrive, and the imminent arrival of Samsung’s ‘Galaxy Gear’ smart watch could mark a concerted effort to introduce wearable technology to the masses.”
