iPhone 5 sales could be set to break all previous smartphone launch records as a new report suggests one in five Britons are looking to snap up Apple’s eagerly awaited handset.
The most eagerly awaited tech launch in recent memory, the iPhone 5 release has been the thing of much rumour and speculation for a number of months with the device finally set to enter the realms of reality later this week during Apple’s confirmed September 12th iPhone 5 launch event.
Ahead of the handset’s unveiling, a study carried out YouGov has found that whilst the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and HTC One X continue to rise in popularity a staggering 21 per cent of the UK population would be interested in owning the Apple iPhone 5. What’s more of those who currently own an Apple branded handset, a hefty 67 per cent said they were looking to upgrade to the iPhone 5.
Suggesting Apple has high consumer expectations to live up to with its sixth-generation iPhone, the YouGov survey has found that of those looking to upgrade to the iPhone 5, 37 per cent of people stated they would most like to see the handset sport an improved battery life whilst 63 per cent said they would like to see the handset increased to a new 4-inch form factor.
"It's clear that a high proportion of the general public are aware and interested that Apple is launching a new product, and that they have fairly high expectations that the iPhone 5 will be a big improvement over the current 4S model," YouGov Associate Director Russell Feldman said.
He added: "This is especially true for those who are already iPhone owners, who are expecting the iPhone 5 will have a longer battery life, 4G capabilities, NFC and mobile payment capabilities, and a larger screen.
"It will be very interesting to see what Apple comes out with on Wednesday, because they clearly have a lot to live up to in terms of consumer expectations."
With just days to go until the iPhone 5 rumours are finally replaced by facts, Apple is expected to launch its latest smartphone offering with a new 4-inch Retina display and a repeatedly leaked quad-core A6 processor. Elsewhere, the long awaited device is tipped to boast an all new metal-backed form factor that is slimmer than its iPhone 4S predecessor thanks in part to a revised 9-pin dock connector that is seemingly set to replace Apple’s current 30-pin standard.
