Apple is pretty good about posting an in-depth specs page online, as each of its shiny products are launched, including the iPhone 5. However, there are a number of missing bits that any geeky gadget fan would want to know. Those iPhone 5 holes are starting to be filled-in.
According to the investigations of AnandTech, a top tech source for hardcore techy geeks, the RAM used in the upcoming iPhone 5 is 1GB of LPDDR2-1066 memory. Not only is that twice the amount that was used in the iPhone 4S, which had 512MB, it’s also a good deal faster. It can crunch through data at 8,528MB/sec, a third faster than the 6,400MB/sec of the iPhone 4S. Memory bandwidth is still lower than the iPad 3, though, which needs the extra to handle the ridiculous number of pixels that live in its Retina display.
AnandTech has also discovered more information about the mysterious A6 iPhone 5 CPU. Apple revealed very little about the specifics of the processor during the phone’s launch, saying only that it was roughly twice as fast as the iPhone 4S. Yes, it’s faster, but how?
Apparently the A6 uses a completely new custom architecture. It doesn’t use the Cortex A9 cores seen in the iPhone 4S, and uses in a great many phones and tablets. Instead, Apple has gone its own way entirely. The chip architecture is based on ARMv, but is of Apple’s own design. It sounds like a whole lot of extra work to us, but if it results in greater efficiency, speed and battery life, we’re not going to complain. We still don’t know the more accessible details of the CPU though – the number of cores or the clock speed. The iPhone 5 is currently available to pre-order, with the first units planned to ship on 21 September. However, if you order now you’ll be in for an extra wait as the first batch of devices has already sold out.
