Apple has confirmed both the release date and price of the new iPhone 4S. It will launch in the UK at the same time as it will in the US, on 14 October. Pre-orders will start a week before on 7 October. Pricing has only been detailed in dollars but demonstrates that it won’t come cheap.

We in the UK are among a select group of markets, including the US, Canada, Australia, France, Germany and Japan, to get the iPhone 4S first on 14 October. 22 more countries will experience the “magic” of Apple’s latest iPhone a fortnight later on 28 October, with 70 countries in total joining the party by the end of the year. Apple says it’s the fastest roll-out of an iPhone yet. It’s impressive stuff.

Can't afford a 4S? Grab a 4, they'll never know the difference

The price is, predictably, enough to make more frugal folks’ eyes water. On a 2-year contract, the iPhone 4S costs $199, $299 and $399 (£130, £195, £260) respectively for the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB editions. This mirrors the previous pricing for the iPhone 4, although of course there was never a 64GB model of that handset. UPDATE: Apple's UK site now details that the iPhone 4S will be available from £499, SIM-free.

If your coffers can’t take such a beating, you may now be able to afford an iPhone 4 or a 3GS, because they’ve been knocked down in price too. The “new” 8GB iPhone 4 will sell for $49 on a two-year contract while the iPhone 3GS will be free. And no, that doesn’t mean you’ll find them in cereal boxes in the coming weeks – a two-year contract still incurs hundreds of dollars of expense.

Of course, what we really want to know is what deals we have to look forward to here in the UK. They’re sure to flood out soon, and we’ll be sure to inform you as they do.
