iPhone 3G S, Nokia N86 & N97 All Launch

A big(ish) day for mobile phones...

There are a lot of high end handsets launching today, but are there a lot of people actually queuing up for them…?

The Apple iPhone 3G S, Nokia N86 and N97 all went on sale this morning and early signs are that their reception has been muted at best. None of the long queues have been spotted that met the iPhone 3G launch and that of the original handset with price and carriers being largely blamed.

In the case of the 3G S the well documented O2 upgrade costs have discouraged many along with the incremental nature of the new version while the N97 currently lacks carrier support and will retail for £499.95 sim free. That said, 3 is signed up and will push out the N97 within the next few weeks while Vodafone is also thought to be interested. As for the N86, the Finn’s first eight megapixel handset could be the least contentious with a number of networks taking it aboard.

Will you be jumping on the upgrade wagon, or does the HTC Magic still hold your heart? Perhaps you’re waiting steadfast for the Palm Pre? Does iPhone OS 3.0 make the 3G S largely irrelevant? On the other hand, if you did upgrade then why and were your local stores busy? Let us know…

”’Update:”’ O2 says the iPhone 3G S is outselling the iPhone 3G on launch day. I suspect however that this is because there was infamously low stock of the second generation handset for its whole first month. Nice try O2…

”’In related news”’ It is being reported the 600MHz CPU inside the 3G S is actually designed to run at 800MHz but is underclocked. The chipset also supports video recording at 720p HD but that is scaled back to VGA. Battery considerations? With the CPU probably, but it seems strange to intentionally hold back the video functionality.
