iPad Mini Screen Production to Start in August

Production of the screens for the so-called iPad Mini will begin this month, according to one analyst. However, they reckon it's not really going to ramp up until later in the year.

“We expect panel production to start in August, with production ramping up to high volumes (more than a million units per month) in the fourth quarter,” said NPD DisplaySearch’s Paul Semenza. The company, like many others, expects the iPad Mini screen to come in at 7.85-inches in size.

The prediction of high volumes late in the year might, on the surface, appear to back up an earlier report from Bloomberg that the new smaller iPad would be released to the general public in December.

A December release wouldn’t quite tally with recent reports that a September 12 reveal is on the cards, though. Apple doesn’t tend to hang around once its devices have been uncovered.

All signs are pointing to a September 21 release, with that Q4 production ramp-up likely intended for the inevitable Christmas rush.

According to another recent report, the iPad Mini will sell for significantly less than the entry-level iPad, which retails for £399. This would suggest a sub-£300 device to take on the similarly sized Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire.
