News of a tiny iPad has cropped-up once more. The iPad mini, which reportedly has a screen between seven and eight inches in size, is rumoured to go on sale this December following an October launch.
According to Bloomberg, which claims to have talked to two people with “knowledge of the plans”, writes that the iPad mini is real and will be unveiled this October, to go on sale before the end of the year. Often dismissed as a myth, iPad mini rumours have been reignited by the recent unveiling of the Google Nexus 7 tablet.
The story’s sources offer few specifics on what the small tablet will offer, but do say that it will offer the same resolution and the first and second generation iPads – 1,024 x 768. In a 7in screen, this would offer pixel density of 183 pixels per inch. That’s arguably not enough to earn the Retina badge, and is less than the Google Nexus 7 offers, but would nevertheless provide a very sharp image. And, more importantly, would make the smaller iPad plug into the App Store easily.
Analyst Shawn Wu of Sterne Agee & Leach Inc claims that the iPad mini will cost around £160, mimicking the price of the Google Nexus 7.
With several of Apple’s main tablet rivals putting a renewed focus in the 7in form – Amazon reportedly has a new Kindle Fire in the works – an iPad mini may seem like a dead cert. However, former Apple CEO Steve Jobs claimed in the past that tablets this size are just too small to offer a good experience. And while Tim Cook has been at Apple’s helm for almost a year, you can bet any Apple product due for launch within the next couple of month will have been worked on by Jobs.
