Following months of high-profile leaks and iPad mini rumours, Apple has formally outed its sub-size iPad 3 follow-on with the 7.9-inch iPad mini playing host to the same 8-pin Lightning port connector as introduced last month on the new iPhone 5 and 2012 iPod touch.
Officially unveiled alongside the new iMac and 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, the iPad mini, plays host to a 7.9-inch, up slightly from the rumoured 7.85-inch form factor, with a 1024 x 768p image resolution similar to that of the iPad 2.
Speaking on the unveiling of the of the iPad mini, Apple head Phil Schiller said: "This is iPad mini. It's incredibly thin and beautiful. Incredibly thin and light.” He added: "This isn't just a shrunken down iPad. There's nothing as amazing as this."

Lining up at 7.2mm thick and just 308g in weight, the iPad mini plays host to a brushed aluminium and glass design with the metal backed device to feature the same all-encompassing black and white colour schemes as found on the iPhone 5 as opposed to the simple, black and white framed front to the iPad 3.
With a 5-megapixel Sight camera and a second, FaceTime HD snapper lining up on the devices fore, the iPad mini camera collection is backed up by a zippy dual-core A5 processor and 35 per cent more usable screen space than standard 7-inch tablets.
With a proclaimed 10 hour battery life, the new iPad mini, which should comfortably see you through a day’s use, is capable of recording 1080p Full HD video and plays host to improved Wi-Fi connectivity. Although the iPad mini is set to be made available in 3G and 4G connectivity forms, the 7.9-inch tablet will launch at first in a Wi-Fi only form.

Although Apple co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs famously ridiculed the premise of a 7-inch tablet branding them ‘tweeners’, Apple is set to start selling its first 7-inch device in a matter of weeks as the iPad mini looks set to go head-to-head with the likes of the Amazon Kindle Fire HD and the Google Nexus 7 in a bid to dominate the lucrative Christmas market.
With an iPad mini UK release date set for next Friday, November 2nd, Apple has announced that iPad mini pre-orders will kick off later this week. Set to be made available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage capacities, the iPad mini price has been set at £269, £349 and £429 respectively.
