Amid a flurry of iPad mini release date rumours, a new mocked-up device has offered a tantalising insight into just how Apple’s expected 7.85-inch tablet might look.
Long rumoured to be heading for release later this month alongside the eagerly awaited Apple iPhone 5, latest reports have suggested Apple will now unveil its sub-sized tablet away from the iPhone 4S follow-on’s shadow with a separate Apple iPad mini launch event rumoured for October.
Taking design hints from the current Apple iPad 3 and the heavily rumoured iPhone 5, the far from official iPad mini mock-ups show a slim, metal-backed device that, like recent iPhone 5 leaks, sports Apple’s repeatedly rumoured new 9-pin dock connector port.
Although Apple co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs famously bashed the idea of 7-inch tablets, suggesting users would have to sandpaper their fingertips down to use the sub-sized devices, the iPod and Mac maker looks set to rival the likes of the Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire with its own 7-inch offering. An Apple iPad mini release date is widely expected ahead of the lucrative pre-Christmas shopping period.
Built around details to have emerged through the recent spate of iPhone 5 rumours, the new iPad mini mock-ups feature a slightly angled, sloping edged form factor with the device lining up slimmer than the svelte iPhone 4S. On top of this, alongside the unit’s 9-pin dock connector on the base, the mini features large inbuilt speakers, improving on the current iPad’s audio output abilities.
Whilst Apple remains cagey on mention of an expansion to its already market dominating tablet line, recent iPad mini rumours have suggested the tablet will be officially unveiled by Apple CEO Tim Cook in its own, dedicated launch event this October. With a release likely to follow just weeks after the device’s unveiling, Apple is looking to capitalise on the Christmas shopping rush with the iPad mini price tipped to set wannabe owners back a wallet-friendly $249.99.
Bringing its full collection of portable iDevices in line with the upcoming iPhone 5, Apple is expected to fit any iPad mini offering with the new 9-pin dock connector whilst the WWDC unveiled, iOS 6 operating system is also likely to feature. If latest leaks are to be believed, the iPad mini will also come boxed with a pair of Apple’s trademark white earbuds as the Cupertino company redesigns its in-ear offerings for its sixth smartphone release.
