The iPad mini may well be with us within a month, but it might not be easy to walk into a shop and buy one. According to a recent analyst report, supply difficulties will likely lead to shortages.
As we reported earlier in the week, all signs are pointing to a launch event for a new smaller Apple tablet – the iPad mini – on October 17. This would result in a launch date on or around November 2.
However, as reported by AppleInsider, Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White has claimed that there have been problems in the manufacturing process. Apparently the iPad mini’s specifications are proving to be challenging for manufacturers, and the resulting yields have been “frustrating.”
According to White, while production of the iPad mini “is on track to reach acceptable volume levels for a launch over the next month,” it won’t be in plentiful supply. “We believe that supply constraints will initially hold back the full sales potential during the first month or so of the launch,” he said.
It’s widely accepted that the iPad mini will feature a 7.85-inch 1,024 x 768 display, placing it in direct competition with the Amazon Kindle Fire and Google Nexus 7.
As recent component leaks appear to have confirmed, it will resemble a large iPod touch as much as a small iPad, thanks to its narrower form factor and squared-off edges.
White believes that the iPad mini will retail for between $250 and $300, which would make it more expensive than the Nexus 7 but considerably less than the iPad. We shouldn’t have too long to find out for sure.
