Various sources have hinted that an iPad mini launch is close at hand. Apparently production has ramped up and invites will be sent on October 10 for an Octover 17 launch.

Don’t think we’ve forgotten about the so-called iPad mini. Prior to the launch of the iPhone 5, there were just as many rumours surrounding Apple’s new shrunken tablet. Of course, now we have all the post-release hubbub for the iPhone 5, which continues to distract attention from what could be Apple’s biggest device of 2012.

According to a report by Fortune, a major Apple investor (who in turn cites “multiple sources”) has claimed that Apple will be sending out invites to a special event on October 10. The event, to be held a week later on October 17, will be to herald the arrival of the iPad mini.

As the report notes, if Apple keeps with its usual procedure of launching within a couple of weeks of a product’s announcement, we should be seeing the iPad mini in shops from November 2.

This report is only reinforced by separate claims on Japanese Apple blog Macatakara. According to “reliable sources,” production of the iPad mini is well underway in Brazil.

The iPad mini is rumoured to have a 7.85-inch display with a 1,024 x 768 resolution, house in an ultra-slim new iPod touch-like body.

Apple is said to be gunning for the likes of the Google Nexus 7 and the Amazon Kindle HD on price, too, with reports that it’ll value from somewhere around the £200 mark - half the price of the entry-level iPad.

We may only have around a two weeks to find out if all these rumours are correct. If, you know, today’s rumours are correct.
