The production of iPad mini accessories has reportedly been halted within the factories of a major OEM manufacturer, because of a last-minute change to the design of the smaller iPad.

It's late in the day for such a shift, but an accessories manufacturer in China has halted production of its iPad mini cases because of a tweak to the tablet's design, according to Macotakara.

The site writes that a change in the “form” of the device caused the issue, with previous leaked components not featuring the same design as the iPad mini that will end up on shelves.

At present it is not clear whether the OEM manufacturer was given a nod from Apple in the first place, or whether it was gambling by basing its designs solely on leaked components. However, even a small change in dimensions would cause big problems for a case-maker.

If this issue is replicated across several key OEMs, it could significantly set back the production of low-cost third-party iPad mini accessories. Not the end of the world, perhaps, but it may mean you have to spend an extra £20 on an official iPad case if you want it in time for Christmas.

iPad mini launch event invites are expected to be sent out later today, with the event itself heavily rumoured to take place on Wednesday 17 October. The iPad mini release date is also out there in rumour form. The tablet is likely to appear on Apple Store shelves on 2 November, just over two weeks after the tablet's unveiling.

Assuming the reported “design tweak” doesn't throw all the iPad mini leaks into the tech dustbin, the new Apple tablet will likely feature an anodised aluminium rear, 7.85in screen and 1,024 x 768 pixel resolution. With a reported price hanging around the £200 mark, it's likely to become one of the top Christmas presents of the year.
