Ferrari has unveiled its new range of sports cars, including the FF model, which is the first to showcase Ferrari’s incorporation of Apple technology.
The four-seater, four-wheel drive, 12-cyclinder engine FF model was unveiled alongside the limited edition LaFerrari hybrid, with the FF integrating the Apple iPad mini into the car’s infotainment system.
“The FF is also now seamlessly integrated with Apple technologies, thanks to direct access to the infotainment system via SIRI voice commands and the adoption of two iPad Minis as the entertainment system of choice for the rear seat passengers,” said di Montezemolo.
The FF is the first example of Ferrari incorporating Apple technology into its cars. Last year, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Online Services, Eddy Cue, joined the Ferrari board as the two companies work to increase their partnership. Whilst unveiling the €1 million ($1.3 million) LaFerrari model, di Montezemolo hinted that the FF will only be the start of Ferrari’s relationship with Apple. The Ferrari president said the sports car manufacturer will be “more precise” about its relationship with Apple in the coming months.
In April last year, it was reported that the Ferrari president and Apple CEO Tim Cook bonded over a two hour meeting, discussing the similar design-based ethos of the two companies. di Montezemolo said the two companies are “connected by the same passion, the same love for the product, maniacal attention to technology, but also to design.”
Apple’s iPad mini offers Ferrari a useful tool to integrate into their cars, packing enough performance and flexibility into a body small enough to fit in the dashboard or the back of headrests for rear passengers.
The Ferrari and Apple partnership is part of a growing trend to bring smart functionality into vehicles, especially with products like the Accel Telecom Voyager and the Ford Sync AppLink system beginning to appear on the tech horizon. Nvidia also recently suggested that “the car will become your third computer”, by an increasing desire to transform vehicles into fully functioning mobile office spaces.
