iPad mini battery capacity leaked

The iPad mini battery has been revealed as a 4,490mAh unit, with less than half the capacity of the battery in the iPad 3.

Pictures of the iPad mini's battery have been published by Apple fanatic website MacRumors. The 16.7 watt-hour battery has a capacity of 4,490mAh and is powered at 3.72 volts.

These photos do not reveal the exact scale of the battery, but do indicate that - as you'd expect - the battery unit sits flat across the majority of the tablet's rear. The power of the unit is much lower than that of the iPad 3's cell, with its 42.5 watt-hour, 11,666mAh specs, but this sits in-line with the lower-powered innards of the smaller iPad mini.

Most importantly, the iPad mini is not expected to use a Retina-grade resolution display. Rather, it'll have a 1,024 x 768 pixel screen, the same as the first two iPads. The iPad 2 has a 6,944mAh battery, and as the iPad mini has a smaller screen, we're hoping it'll be able to squeeze out the iPad-standard 10-hour stamina.

The iPad mini launch is reportedly to be held on 23 October, when the 13-inch MacBook Pro is also set to be unveiled. Apple's smaller iPad is likely to sell for around £200, as was indicated in the stock system of a European retailer.

Other specs that have virtually been nailed down already include the iPad mini's 7.85in screen size, that it'll have two cameras and be powered by a dual-core processor.

The same retailer that inadvertently leaked the iPad mini's price also suggests it'll come in eight flavours, from 8GB storage all the way up to 64GB, in both 3G and Wi-Fi only iterations. However, conflicting reports suggest this titbit may have been the retailer in question fabricating the details just to get the tablet on the books early.

If the iPad mini is to get an unveiling next week, launch invites are likely to be sent out later today. Fingers crossed, eh?
