iPad mini and iPad 4 sales top 3m units in opening weekend

Following last Friday’s joint iPad mini UK release date and iPad 4 launch, Apple has revealed that it has broken opening weekend sales records, shifting 3 million iPads during the two devices’ first three days on sale.

Although Apple has failed to breakdown the figures to offer a more detailed insight into the number of new iPad mini devices sold in relation to the fourth-generation 9.7-inch counterparts, the iPhone 5 manufacturer has revealed that a combined total of 3 million tablets were shifted during three days as the latest iOS 6 machines launched across 34 countries on the same day.

“Customers around the world love the new iPad mini and fourth generation iPad,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We set a new launch weekend record and practically sold out of iPad minis. We're working hard to build more quickly to meet the incredible demand.”

With Wi-Fi only models of the two devices launching first, Wi-Fi cellular models are set to land later this year, Apple has claimed that the iPad mini and iPad 4 launch weekend doubled previous iPad launch records, eclipsing the 1.5million Wi-Fi only iPad 3 models shifted at release earlier this year.

Focal point of last week’s joint release date, the iPad mini is Apple’s first sub-sized tablet offering with the 7.9-inch device lining up as a direct rival to the Google powered, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean launching Google Nexus 7.

Available in Apple’s classic collection of 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage capacities, the iPad mini’s 7.9-inch 1024 x 768p display is slotted within a svelte 7.2mm thick, brushed aluminium backed body that is available in both black and white colour forms. Measuring in at a comfortable 308g in weight, the iPad mini is powered by a zippy A5 dual-core processor with the Amazon Kindle Fire HD competitor boasting 35 per cent more usable display real-estate than its standard 7-inch rivals.

Touted as hosting an impressive 10 hour battery life, the iPad mini features a pair of inbuilt cameras with a 5-megapixel iSight camera lining up on the device’s rear with 1080p Full HD video recording capabilities whilst a second, FaceTime HD snapper feature’s on the tablet’s front.

All these various sales figure claims from manufacturers, are these independently audited figures? Do they actually mean anything? I could say I sold an impressive number of widgets last weekend, especially if I thought it might generate some favourable advertorial, with no questions asked. Why do you report this stuff - because they say it, therefore it's news?

Actual market figures would be interesting and newsworthy, but not self-serving unverifiable claims from the PR departments.

Sadly news and media is funded by these giants so it's very difficult to have a completely bias free media.

Favours for favours I'm afraid. Media in general is no longer independent. Only news media I like is BBC funded by the tax payer.

The truth is the more you sway your opinions to x company the more you get in return i.e. Plenty of the latest gadgets free for review and even to keep, free invites to their tech venues etc.
