iPad market share declines following Christmas

Following the festive period, new figures have suggested that the iPad’s share of tablet based web traffic has decreased since Christmas, hinting at the rapid rise of Android tablet adoption.

Although still the dominant force on the tablet scene, latest figures compiled by ad network Chitika have suggested that the Apple iPad’s share of all web traffic from tablets has plummeted 7.14 per cent since Christmas day. Whilst the iPad’s share has slumped, however, a number of Android powered devices have seen their market share increase.

The data, based on hundreds of millions of ad impression from the US and Canada since December 25, has found that of all the Android tablets now doing the rounds, the Amazon Kindle Fire range has seen the biggest jump in web traffic with a 3.03 per cent rise to a 7.51 per cent share. Although dwarfed by the current 78.86 per cent share help by Apple, the iPad dominance has begun to slide, down from an 86 per cent stronghold prior to the holiday season.

Despite being one of the highest selling Android tablets on the market, the wallet-friendly Google Nexus 7, along with its larger sibling, the Google Nexus 10, controls just 2.04 per cent of all tablet based web traffic, a figure up 0.92 per cent since the Christmas celebrations.

Although still finding its feet in the tablet screen the Windows 8 platform is represented by the Microsoft Surface in the list of devices stealing market share from Apple’s iPad range that includes the recently launched iPad mini and iPad 4.

Despite accounting for just 0.40 per cent of all tablet instigated web traffic, this figure marks a 0.17 per cent rise over the pre-Christmas period, suggesting the Microsoft Surface tablet’s less than impressive launch has been bolstered by its recent introduction to a number of high street retail outlets.

Although facing a considerable drop, the iPad is not the only tablet shedding its web traffic figures with the lacklustre BlackBerry PlayBook also losing ground on its Android rivals. Spelling the beginning of the end for the device that could soon be replaced by a new BlackBerry 10 offering, the BlackBerry PlayBook has seen its control seep 0.02 per cent to just a 0.68 per cent market share.
