Both the iPad Air and iPad mini 2 could launch some time this year with improved 8-megapixel cameras.
If you’re anything like us, the thought of whipping your tablet out in public and taking pictures with it is patently absurd. Tablets are by their very nature too unwieldy for such a task, and the included camera tech is invariably inferior to that of even a mid-range smartphone.
Apple may be set to address that last point, at least, with its next generation iPad offering.
According to Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities – one analyst who actually gets the odd thing right with regard to Apple predictions – Apple is going to launch both the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 this year with improved 8-megapixel cameras.
“As the tablet market becomes increasingly competitive,” Kuo said, “Apple could upgrade the camera as a selling point for the new iPad in a bid to increase competitiveness.”
He expects the 5-megapixel units found in the iPad 4 and iPad mini to be upgraded to 8-megapixel examples, bringing basic spec parity with the current iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. Kuo also anticipates that Apple will include a larger aperture than the current f/2.4 standard, which sounds very much like the f/2.2 aperture found in the iPhone 5S.
Whether we’ll get the low light snap-aiding larger image sensor of the iPhone 5S’s camera is unclear, but it would make sense given the traditional lack of flash in the iPad range.
The question now is, would a new and improved camera make up for the possible lack of a Retina display in the forthcoming iPad mini 2?
