iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 launch event confirmed for October 22

An iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 launch event has been confirmed, with Apple issuing invites to an October 22 unveiling.

With the iPad 5 believed to be heading for an official unveiling alongside a Retina display hosting iPad mini 2, Apple has ended much speculation, confirming that it will announce new products one week from today.

Set to be announced a little over a month after the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C entered the realms of reality, the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 launch event has been confirmed with Apple issuing invites to its upcoming event.

Stating simply “We still have a lot to cover,” the Apple launch event invite has hinted that the company could potentially have more than a pair of new tablets up its sleeve.

According to recent iPad 5 rumours, the fifth-generation tablet will sport an all new design, with a slimmer, flatter backed design also benefiting from a considerably narrower bezel. In a bid to make the tablet more manageable in a single hand, it has been suggested that the iPad 5’s overall width will be cut from 18.5cm to 17cm.

Despite this smaller form factor, the iPad 5 screen will retain the 9.7-inch Retina offering of recent models, while the iPhone 5S’s 64-bit A7 processor, TouchID fingerprint scanner and Space Grey colour scheme have all been tipped for inclusion. Further iPad 5 specs expected to make an appearance include improved camera optics  and a larger battery.

Joining in the pre-release teasing, a number of iPad mini 2 rumours have also been doing the rounds, with a 7.9-nich Retina display the most widely expected addition.

Although improved visuals will be welcomed by many, it has been suggested that the Retina display could force the tablet to be fatter and heavier than the original, with a larger battery also making the cut.

With Apple teasing it has “a lot to cover,” anticipation over a potential ‘and one more thing’ announcement is sure to hit fever pitch ahead of next week’s event. Previous reports have suggested an Apple iWatch or Apple iTV could be in for a formal unveiling.
