Special report: iPad 3 / New iPad : What You Need To Know
Hands on: iPad 3 Review
Serial Apple rumour-monger DigiTimes has come up with another goodie. It suggests that the iPad 3 may feature a curved glass screen, citing reports from deep within the glass-making industry. That's one industry we haven't thought about in a while…
DigiTimes has been the source for many an Apple rumour over the years, ranging from the accurate to the ridiculous. The latest suggests that the iPad 3 - currently pegged for release next year - will feature a curved glass screen. This kind of glass frontage is used in several popular devices of the moment, including the Google Nexus S, and can help reduce screen reflections.
The current iPad 2 has a flat, glass-covered front
The instigating evidence for this rumour started in May when Apple reportedly bought between 200 and 300 glass cutting machines, and the rumour is beginning to gain more weight. Our initial assumption for such a move would have been that the iPhone 5 is headed for the curved glass treatment, but as it's expected to launch next week, those glass-cutting machines were probably a little too late to arrive for that particular duty.
The precise wording of the latest DigiTimes report, released on Monday, is that "Apple reportedly has bought glass polishing equipment for its suppliers in preparation for the production of devices fitted with curved cover glass." If the iPhone 5 is announced next week as expected, this points towards the iPad 3 as the most likely curvy candidate, being 2012's first sure-fire iOS release.
Apple in glass-bottomed boat design shocker
Google claimed that the curved glass screen of the Nexus S would improve the comfort of calling, fitting more ergonomically against your face. When the iPad 3 is - we hope - not going to be positioned as a device for phone calls, we have to wonder what the headline function of this new design will be. Could Apple be heading for an altogether curvier design for its next set of iOS devices? To be honest, we'd much rather have a Retina Display, Apple.
