Developers who have been seeded the latest version of iOS
have discovered references to the next version of the iPad as well as the next
iPhone hidden within the code.
Website 9to5 Mac has discovered the references in the code
for iOS 5.1 which has just been released to developers. In it, Apple makes
reference to an iPad 2,4 as well as an iPad 3,1, 3,2 and 3,3 and an iPhone 5,1 all of which are set to be released next year.
Looking at the iPad first, the 2,4 version is unlikely to be
a major update but is more likely to be a WiMAX-enabled version of the iPad 2
for use on Sprint’s network in the US.
Looking forward however and the code also makes reference to
the iPad 3,1, 3,2 and 3,3 which are set to be released in March 2012. Last week
DigiTimes reported that Apple is developing two versions of the iPad 3 –
codenamed J1 and J2 internally – and are still deciding which to release.
The iPhone 5,1 which is referred to in the code is likely to
be a major update to the iPhone 4S which was released last month and didn’t see
a major update in terms of design over the iPhone 4.
The reference to the iPhone 5 in the code for iOS 5.1
suggests that we won’t have to wait too long until the next iPhone appears with
a more usual summer release likely after this year’s October launch.
