Special report: iPad 3 / New iPad : What You Need To Know
Hands on: iPad 3 Review

With the reported launch date for the iPad 3 (iPad 2S?) of 7 March almost upon us, rumours and speculation regarding the new tablet are coming thick and fast.

While we have already seen some leaked images of the interior casing of the iPad 3, website M.I.C. Gadget has managed to get its hands on an image of the exterior, showing an iPad 2 sitting on top of the iPad 3.

While the angle of the image doesn’t give us the ideal viewing angle to judge thickness, it does seem as if the iPad 3 will be noticeably thicker than the iPad 2, though previous reports have put the difference at only a few millimetres. However, considering the iPad 2 is only 8.8mm thick, a few millimetres extra will certainly be noticeable.

The reason for the extra bulk? Possibly the inclusion of an LTE radio, but again this is only speculation.

Another leaked image to appear on the web in recent days, suggests than the chip inside the new Apple tablet will be called the A5X rather than the A6, suggesting that the iPad will be powered by a dual-core processor and not a quad-core chip, similar to the Tegra 3 chip seen in the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime.

The image, from WeiPhone, purports to show the logic board from the new iPad, with the A5X chip very prominent. Of course this could be a prototype and an A6 chip could still show up in the new tablet when it is launched in a couple of weeks.
