iPad 3 Could Have Thicker Casing

Special report: iPad 3 / New iPad : What You Need To Know

Hands on: iPad 3 Review

With the reported launch date for the iPad 3 (iPad 2S?) of 7 March almost upon us, rumours and speculation regarding the new tablet are coming thick and fast.

While we have already seen some leaked images of the interior casing of the iPad 3, website M.I.C. Gadget has managed to get its hands on an image of the exterior, showing an iPad 2 sitting on top of the iPad 3.

While the angle of the image doesn’t give us the ideal viewing angle to judge thickness, it does seem as if the iPad 3 will be noticeably thicker than the iPad 2, though previous reports have put the difference at only a few millimetres. However, considering the iPad 2 is only 8.8mm thick, a few millimetres extra will certainly be noticeable.

The reason for the extra bulk? Possibly the inclusion of an LTE radio, but again this is only speculation.

Another leaked image to appear on the web in recent days, suggests than the chip inside the new Apple tablet will be called the A5X rather than the A6, suggesting that the iPad will be powered by a dual-core processor and not a quad-core chip, similar to the Tegra 3 chip seen in the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime.

The image, from WeiPhone, purports to show the logic board from the new iPad, with the A5X chip very prominent. Of course this could be a prototype and an A6 chip could still show up in the new tablet when it is launched in a couple of weeks.

First off, what is there to indicate that that is an iPad 3 case? Secondly, I am 90% sure it is just a perspective issue from the misleading angle of the shot. It has been taken with a fairly wide angle lens and the top case is sitting a little way back on the top of the bottom case, so it appears significantly smaller in length too. Also we are looking down slightly on the bottom case, but almost square on to the top one, and with the rounded edges it is difficult to tell where the side ends and the back begins, i.e. some of the perceived "thickness" is actually the flat back of the device, but the angle and lighting makes it amgibuous.

AS I said in the article John, this is certainly not an ideal viewing angle to judge the thickness of the supposed iPad 3 case. All stories relating to the iPad and any other Apple product are necessarily going to have to be taken with a pinch of salt as Apple are so good at keeping things under wraps ahead of any launch.

However, considering we had heard reports previously that the iPad 3 would be thicker than the iPad 2, then this image was certainly of interest. We won't know until Apple finally reveals its next tablet, but we like keep on top of what is being rumoured and we like to think our readers do too.

If you want to keep your readers on top of the rumours why wasn't the other rumour - in that very same MIC gadget article you refer to - mentioned?

"The Chinese poster on the forum also indicated that the bezel on iPad 3 is narrower"

I guess you missed it, TR does tend to selective vision.
