iOS 7.1 set for release over next few weeks

Apple is set to release the next major version of its mobile operating system, iOS 7.1, over the coming weeks.

It’s been a little under five months since the initial release of iOS 7, Apple’s boldest mobile software revamp yet. The next version promises to further hone and refine this brightly coloured operating system, and its arrival could be imminent.

BGR reckons that Apple is done with releasing beta versions of the next iOS (there have been five so far), which just leaves the gold master build followed swiftly by a public release.

One source points to an early March release for iOS 7.1, but BGR thinks that this is a conservative estimate. All of which means that we could be looking at a late February launch for the revised iPhone and iPad operating system.

Many of the changes present in iOS 7.1 address specific issues with iOS 7. These include a relative lack of stability, both in terms of apps and the OS itself. The new version should also run smoother on older devices.

Apple has also tweaked the user interface to be more consistent with its new flat approach. New animations have been added, and existing ones have been sped up a little.

In addition, we could see iOS 7.1 introducing iOS in the Car, Apple’s attempt to extend the iPhone interface to your car’s dashboard display. Fresh elements have appeared in recent iOS 7.1 beta releases.
