iOS 6 release date confirmed - coming 19 September

iOS 6

Apple confirmed the release date of iOS 6 at the launch of the iPhone 5. It'll be available for download on 19 September, a week from now.

iOS 6 brings plenty of new features, but they're largely enriching, rather than revolutionary ones. Facebook and Twitter integration has been massively improved, Siri has gotten smarter, and the Maps app has been given a complete overhaul. It's absolutely worth tracking down on 19 September, but it won't alienate any current iOS users. This is Apple, after all.

Apple has also confirmed the devices that will get the leap up to iOS 6 and - thankfully - nothing too new has been left out in the cold. On the iPhone front, the 3GS, 4 and 4S will all be treated to a new coat of software paint. In iPod touch land, 4th generation devices will get the boost. And both the iPad 2 and current iPad can look forward to iOS 6 next week. That's a good result, as the iPhone 3GS has just been booted of the Apple Store, but not out of Apple support altogether.

iOS 6 will be available as a download from iTunes or - presumably - a download direct from devices the latest current version of iOS. We recommend waiting for a few hours before trying to download as the servers will be swamped.
