Intel finally releases 5th Gen Intel Core processors

It’s been a long time coming, with numerous delays slowing the rollout, but Intel finally released its 5th Generation chips at CES 2015.

Ten new 15W processors with Intel HD Graphics and four new 28W processors with Intel Iris Graphics were announced with a variety of manufacturers set to launch 5th Gen packing products this month. These include i3, i5 and i7 as well as 14nm Pentium and Celeron chips. That’s on top of the Intel Core M that was announced at IDF 2014 that is specifically aimed at 2-in-1 fanless hybrids.

Utilizing Intel’s 14nm process this latest line of processors are much smaller and more efficient than previously. Compared with the Gen 4 Haswell chips Intel claims the codename Broadwell Gen 5s deliver up to 24% better graphical performance, 50% faster video conversion and add an hour and a half of battery life.

Intel is gunning for users with older PCs and people looking to refresh. It claims that the 5th Gen cores deliver 12 times better graphical performance, nine times faster boot times and twice the battery life of a 4 or 5 year old PC. The smaller forms and lower power consumption also means we should see even thinner and lighter notebooks, hybrids and all in ones coming soon.

On top of that Intel gave a boost to the low-cost tablet market by also announcing that it’s “Cherry Trail” Atom range of processors have begun to ship, with devices coming to market before the summer.
