Instagram “listening” over timeline changes, plans to do it anyway

Instagram users have been in uproar over the past few days after some members began noticing a limited rollout of non-linear timelines.

The result? Folks banding together through the hashtag #turnmeon, requesting that others enable notifications for every single post – which, of course, is utterly ridiculous to anyone over the age of 14.

Amid the panic, Instagram took to Twitter (via Engadget) today to reassure those objecting to out-of-sync posts that the changes will not be fully coming into effect yet.

Essentially, the firm said it was listening to users, but reaffirmed the plans to defy their wishes anyway.

Instagram is following in the footsteps of its Facebook overlords by mixing up the order of posts depending on how interesting it thinks individual users will find them.

It reaffirms all posts will continue to be shown, only jumbled up a little depending on your previous interactions with people and the timing of those posts.

The announcement was made earlier in March, with Instagram pledging a rollout in the “coming months”, with only a small proportion of users seeing it initially.

“If your favourite musician shares a video from last night’s concert, it will be waiting for you when you wake up, no matter how many accounts you follow or what timezone you live in,” wrote Instagram.

“And when your best friend posts a photo of her new puppy, you won’t miss it.”
