Instagram has launched its own music-based account, known as @Music.
According to the image-focused social network, @Music is "a new account dedicated to exploring music around the globe, from those who create it to the community around it."
It's the first time that Instagram has put its name behind a specific kind of content, and it's fitting that the company has chosen music. Instagram says that among its 300 million users, more than a quarter are musicians.
Instagram has become a major promotional tool for such artists, and a way for musicians to interact directly with their fans.
The new @Music account promises to show followers "a different side of artists you know and love," as well as highlighting new and upcoming talent from around the world.
Of course, Instagram is predominantly a visual service, and that's why the new account will feature music photographers, album illustrators, and instrument makers. It will also offer 15-second music lessons.
As BuzzFeed points out, the @Music account will update daily from Tuesday to Sunday from now on.
We can probably expect to see more curated content accounts from Instagram in the future, too. With a goal to increase the time users spend looking at the site each day (it currently sits at 21 minutes on average), high quality editorial content is seen as the way forward.
